Description
Pont d'Iena (the English word is Jena Bridge), links the Eiffel Tower to the Trocadero district. The bridge was built on the orders of Napoleon to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Jena in 1807. The bridge was constructed between 1808 and 1814. It has five arches, each arc almost 30 yards in length, and four span piers. The sides have been redecorated several times according to who was ruling France; imperial eagles were replaced by the royal letter "L" when the crown regained control, and visa versa. Four pylons mark the corners of the bridge, each bearing a warrior; Gallic, Roman, Arab and Greek. In 1937, with the upcoming World's Fair likely to generate massive volumes of traffic, the bridge was widened, extended, and the imperial eagles returned.
